I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; (1 Timothy 2:1-3)
Notice the “S” on the end of each word in bold print. The "S" tells us that these are things that "saved" folks should do daily for those in leadership positions. We don’t spend enough time praying for those that are in leadership or authority. I don’t think that the church as a whole, from the pulpit to the pews, realize how important it is that we do. Actually, the church should make it a point to teach and encourage the people of God to pray for their leaders daily. Every time the church gathers together there should be a call for prayer for our leaders, both spiritual leaders as well as those in public office.
Today is Election Day, and if there has every been a time to pray it is now. Regardless of who wins, there will be a lot of folks who will not be happy with the outcome of the election. Saved or unsaved, there will be many who will lose hope because they put all of their hopes and dreams in a man and his party.
Too often we put to much confidence in man, contrary to what the scriptures tell us to do. Many "saved" folks are putting all of their hopes and dreams in a politician. The politicians that we believe are our great liberators and Messiahs are human just like we are. They are faults running around on two legs, just like we are. There is only one messiah and His name is Jesus. He is the only one that can lift you out of whatever situation you find yourself in. No man or woman can do what God does. The Lord might use individuals to assist you, but your confidence should be in God not the individuals.
Paul urges us to do no other thing but to pray for our leaders. He does not say put them on a pedestal and make them or their affiliations our Gods. He simple says to pray for them. That way if your candidate does not win, you won’t lose hope. If we would pray for those in authority more often than we do, if at all, this world would be a better place, hence verse 2: "That we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty." By-the-way, prayer gives Hope, and prayer is certainly "Change" we can use.
